The Romans - Huh?

Welcome to Mr. Parkinson's Latin Site! In this classroom we are unlocking the mysteries of ancient Rome through Latin. As with understanding any culture, the best way to do so is in its original language. Along the way, we are going to learn about how we can trace our own culture and language back to Rome.

In the World Language Department of Arlington Public Schools, we seek to develop in students the ability to communicate effectively, think critically, and participate actively and responsibly in a multilingual global society.

CORE BELIEFS

We believe...

  • that all children can and should learn another language, and that foreign language education should therefore be available to all children.

  • that the study of any language is critical to a child’s development, and therefore

  • that all languages are critical languages.

  • that children can greatly benefit from learning more than one foreign language, and that the study of one language enhances the study of additional languages.

  • that the study of a foreign language and culture encourages students to develop a greater understanding of their own language and culture.

  • that languages allow children to explore the world and imagine it from a different perspective.

  • that foreign language education is crucial in developing 21st century skills.

  • that the primary goal of a modern language program is communicative proficiency.

  • that the primary goal of a classical language program is reading proficiency.

  • that to progress through the levels of proficiency in a language requires a long and sequential period of study.

  • that, following the national standards set forth by the American Council of the

  • Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), the target language should be used for 90% or more of instructional time for modern languages.

WORLD LANGUAGE LEARNER GOAL
All students will develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills which will allow them to communicate in languages other than English and to appreciate and understand the cultures in which these languages are spoken.
